Zone Hierarchy

The world is organized in layers, from safe home zones to punishing endgame content:

Your Hideout (personal safe zone)
  └─ Portal to the World Hub

World Hub (central meeting point)
  ├─ Portal back to Hideout
  ├─ Starter Zone (tutorial area, no enemies)
  └─ Combat Zones (enemies present, level-scaled)
       ├─ Entry Zones (large, accessible from World Hub)
       │ ├─ Middle Zones (smaller, higher density)
       │ │ └─ Endcap Zones (smallest, maximum difficulty)
       │    └─ Direct sub-zones
       └─ Endgame Zones (level 100+, modifier-enabled)

Key rule: You can only exit your hideout through the World Hub portal. No zones connect directly to the hideout.

Zone Chain Pattern

Zones are organized in progressive difficulty chains within biomes:

World Hub → Entry Zone (10×10) → Middle Zone (5×5) → Endcap Zone (3×3)
Layer Grid Size What to Expect
Entry 10×10 Large area to explore, moderate difficulty
Middle 5×5 Maze-like layout, higher enemy density
Endcap 3×3 Maximum difficulty, boss encounters, best loot

Each zone has a parent zone you can return to.

Mid-Range Variety Branches (Levels 11-40)

Most L11-40 levels only had 2 zones each, so players saw the same one or two places at each level band. Six new single-square branch zones were added off existing same-level zones to give each band a real alternative path — distinct biome, hazard, and boss flavor, never duplicating an existing same-level zone's theme:

New Zone (Level) Attached To Theme Boss
Silkweb Hollow (L14) Abandoned Chapel (3,3) Spider-choked woodland hollow, shrine to a spider queen The Widow's Wail (spirit)
Sunken Shipwreck (L18) Shattered Keep (5,5) Beached pirate wreck in a sea cave, has an NPC (Old Salt Garrick) Captain Merrow (undead revenant)
Crumbling Coliseum (L22) Ashen Ruins (2,8) Ruined gladiator arena, Champion's memorial wall The Champion's Ghost (spirit)
Rustwind Millworks (L27) Tower Approach (1,6) Abandoned windmill/grain-mill farmstead The Grain King (beast)

Gearwood Asylum (L37) Corpse Gardens (8,8) Abandoned clockwork sanatorium, taunting warden's plaque Warden Ashcombe (undead)

Each is a standalone 6x6 branch zone (36 squares) reachable via a single transition from its parent zone, with its own return transition — not part of a 3-layer entry/middle/endcap chain. Zone count is now 171 total.

Zone Modifiers (Endgame Scaling)

In endgame zones (level 100), you can activate modifiers before entering. Modifiers make enemies harder but dramatically increase loot quality. Stack multiple modifiers for greater risk and greater reward.

This is how endgame progression works: Your character caps at level 100, but modifier-scaled zones produce enemies at effective levels 110, 120, 140+ — dropping gear at those higher levels that you can equip.

8 Modifiers

Modifier What It Does Loot Bonus
Empowered Enemies have +25% more HP +15%
Frenzied Enemies deal +20% more damage +15%
Endless Enemies respawn after death +25%
Cursed Your healing is reduced by 20% +20%
Nightmare Visibility is severely reduced +10%
Bloodlust Enemies heal 10% of damage they deal +30%
Void Touched Random teleportation events +20%
Death's Door Potions don't recharge between encounters +40%

Modifier Stacking

You can stack multiple modifiers for additive bonuses. Each endgame zone has a pool of 4-8 available modifiers — only the zone's pool can be applied (you can't use any modifier on any zone).

Worlds End is unique: it offers all 8 modifiers, for a maximum combined loot bonus of +175%.

Risk/Reward Examples

  • Death's Door alone: +40% loot, but you must manage potions carefully between fights
  • Empowered + Frenzied + Bloodlust: +25% enemy HP, +20% damage, enemies self-heal, +60% loot
  • All 8 on Worlds End: Maximum possible challenge, maximum possible reward

Trap Mechanics

Traps are hidden hazards placed on zone squares. When a player steps onto a trapped square, a detection-disarm-trigger sequence runs automatically. Traps are generated per-zone based on a configurable density percentage.

Trap Lifecycle (4 States)

HIDDEN → (detection check) → DETECTED → (disarm check) → DISARMED
                 ↓ fail                       ↓ fail (30% chance)
              TRIGGERED                    TRIGGERED
State Meaning
HIDDEN Trap is invisible — will trigger if player fails passive detection
DETECTED Player spotted the trap — can attempt disarm or step back
DISARMED Trap is safe — no longer dangerous
TRIGGERED Trap has fired — damage applied, trap consumed

On-Enter Sequence

When a player moves onto a square with a trap (handleTrapOnSquare()):

  1. Skip if trap is already DISARMED or TRIGGERED
  2. Passive detection (if HIDDEN): (detectionChance/2 + d100) >= detectionDifficulty
    • Success: trap becomes DETECTED, player sees description, proceeds to disarm
    • Fail: trap TRIGGERS immediately, damage applied
  3. Disarm attempt (if DETECTED): (disarmChance + d100) >= disarmDifficulty
    • Success: trap becomes DISARMED, player passes safely
    • Fail: 30% chance to trigger trap, 70% chance to fail safely ("you step back")

Detection Formula

baseChance = (intelligence * 0.6 + agility * 0.4) / 5
classBonus = +15 (Rogue) | +5 (Sorcerer) | 0 (others)
explorationBonus = stats.explorationTrapDetectionBonus (from gear/class)
totalDetectionChance = min(100, max(0, baseChance + classBonus + explorationBonus))

Active detection:  (totalDetectionChance + d100) >= detectionDifficulty
Passive detection: (totalDetectionChance/2 + d100) >= detectionDifficulty

Passive detection is half as effective as active detection.

Disarm Formula

baseChance = (agility * 0.7 + intelligence * 0.3) / 5
classBonus = +20 (Rogue) | -5 (Fighter) | 0 (others)
explorationBonus = stats.explorationTrapDisarmBonus (from gear/class)
totalDisarmChance = min(100, max(0, baseChance + classBonus + explorationBonus))

Disarm check: (totalDisarmChance + d100) >= disarmDifficulty
Failed disarm: 30% chance to trigger trap

Difficulty Scaling

Detection and disarm difficulties scale with zone level:

Property Formula Range
Detection difficulty 10 + (zoneLevel / 2) 10 - 85
Disarm difficulty 15 + (zoneLevel / 2) 15 - 90

Disarm is always harder than detection by +5 base difficulty.

Trap Damage Formula

baseDamage = (10 + zoneLevel * 5) * typeMultiplier
Damage Tier Multiplier Trap Types
Extreme 2.0x Crushing Trap, Blade Trap
High 1.5x Bear Trap, Lightning Trap
Moderate 1.0x Spike Trap, Arrow Trap, Fire Trap, Acid Trap
Low 0.75x Frost Trap, Poison Gas Trap, Curse Trap
Utility 0.5x Net Trap, Mana Drain Trap
None 0.0x Alarm Trap, Summoning Trap

Example: Zone Level 50, Blade Trap = (10 + 250) * 2.0 = 520 damage

Alarm/Summoning Traps (2)

Trap Damage Tier Special Effect
Alarm Trap None (0.0x) Attracts nearby enemies
Summoning Trap None (0.0x) Spawns additional enemies

DoT Traps

Three trap types apply damage over time: Fire Trap, Poison Gas Trap, and Acid Trap. Their DoT duration is randomized: 2 + random(0-2) = 2 to 4 rounds.

Trap Generation

Traps are generated per-zone when the zone is first created:

trapsToGenerate = ceil(totalSquares * (trapDensity / 100.0))
  • Traps are randomly placed on available squares
  • Squares with blocked terrain, interactions, or starting position (10,10) are excluded
  • Trap type is uniformly random from all 18 types
  • All traps start in HIDDEN state

Zone Difficulty Warnings

When you enter a zone significantly above your level, the game warns you:

  • Zone is 5+ levels above you: "Warning: extremely dangerous!" — turn back or be prepared
  • Zone is 1-4 levels above you: "Caution" — challenging but manageable
  • Zone is at or below your level: No warning shown

Region Hub Pattern (Zone Growth, 2026-07-22)

As Darkness Falls grows, new zones need somewhere to plug into the world. The 12x12 World Map has a fixed number of squares, and content growth can fill it up faster than expected.

Region Hubs solve this: instead of adding every new zone directly to the World Map, related zones are grouped by level band into a themed waypoint. The World Map carries ONE portal to the hub; the hub itself has room for dozens more zones as that level band grows.

Region Hub Level Band Reached From World Map
Northern Waystation 1-10 (8,1)
Ashfall Crossing 11-20 (11,2)
The Sundered Waypost 21-30 (1,3)
Duskmere Concourse 31-50 (2,3)
The Hollow Convergence 51-99 (1,4)

Each hub works exactly like any other zone — walk in, explore, walk out — it just happens to be a waypoint that future zones will branch off from, the same way Trevmarch City already branches into Hall of Records and the Thieves Guild.
