Darkness Falls - End Game Design

Status: PARTIAL — Endgame loop largely local_proved (rifts/sieges/mastery/hideout/set forge); competitive seasons launch still gated by parity suite Created: 2026-03-31 Last verified: 2026-06-03 (queue — enter rift zone generation + enemy spawn wired) Alignment plan: design-code-alignment.md § 2.3 + Wave 2–5 — close PARTIAL loops before inventing new endgame layers

The Darkness Falls end game provides compelling reasons to keep playing after reaching level 100. It combines repeatable challenge content (Abyssal Rifts), massive social encounters (World Sieges), and account-wide prestige progression (Mastery System).

Design Pillars

  1. Always something to do - Solo and group activities with weekly resets and ongoing progression
  2. Social incentive - World Sieges require community coordination and reward collective effort
  3. Visible power growth - Mastery perks, rift rankings, and siege rewards create measurable progression beyond level cap
  4. Lasting Standard value - Mastery is account-level and carries forward to Standard characters; Current Season keeps the history visible but suppresses its mechanical effects

Layer 1: Abyssal Rifts (Repeatable Challenge Dungeons)

Concept

Procedurally generated mini-zones with escalating difficulty tiers. Solo or party activity. The core repeatable end game grind.

How It Works

  1. Enter a rift from the hideout ("open rift" or "enter rift")
  2. Each rift is a compact 5x5 zone with dense enemy packs and a boss at the end
  3. Rifts have tiers (1-20+). Higher tier = harder enemies, better rewards
  4. Each rift gets a random modifier combination (2 at Tier 1, up to 6 at Tier 10+)
  5. Clear the rift by defeating the boss to advance to the next tier
  6. Death resets your rift progress for the week (you keep all loot earned)
  7. Weekly reset - your rift tier resets to 1 every Monday, pushing you to climb again

Rift Tier Scaling

Effective levels match exactly. Tiers 11-20 extend the standard endgame scaling table beyond level 150 — see combat.md § Endgame Scaling Table for the HP/damage/loot multipliers.

Tier Enemy Effective Level Modifiers Boss HP Multiplier Loot Bonus
1-3 105-115 2 random 2x +25% rarity
4-6 120-130 3 random 3x +50% rarity, +25% gold
7-9 135-145 4 random 5x +100% rarity, +50% gold
10-12 150-160 5 random 8x +200% rarity, rift-exclusive drops
13-15 165-175 5 + 1 curse 12x +300% rarity, guaranteed legendary
16-20 184-220 6 random 20x Rift set pieces, unique crafting mats

Rift-Exclusive Rewards

  • Rift Essences - Currency dropped in rifts, used to craft rift-exclusive gear
  • Rift Set Pieces (Tier 10+) - 4-piece set bonuses (e.g., "Abyssal" set: 2pc = +15% damage in rifts, 4pc = enemies drop double essences)
  • Rift Cosmetics (Tier 15+) - Titles, auras, trophy pedestals
  • Rift Leaderboard - Highest tier cleared per week, seasonal rankings

Multiplayer Rifts

  • Party members enter the same rift instance
  • Difficulty scales: +50% enemy HP per additional party member
  • Loot is individual (no fighting over drops)
  • Party rift clears count for all members weekly progression

Layer 2: World Sieges (Massive Social Events)

Concept

A single massive enemy threatens the world. ALL players contribute damage across multiple zones simultaneously. The enemy health pool is shared globally - every hit from every player counts. When the siege boss dies, ALL contributors earn rewards scaled by their contribution.

Why Multi-Zone?

  • Prevents server overload from many players in one zone
  • Each zone represents a different "front" of the battle
  • Players pick the front that matches their build (fire-themed front, melee front, etc.)
  • Max ~10 players per zone instance for performance

How It Works

  1. Siege Announcement - A world siege begins (scheduled: every 72 hours, or triggered by seasonal events)
  2. Siege Zones Open - 4-6 siege zones appear on the world map, each themed around a damage type
  3. Players Enter - Any level 50+ player can join by entering a siege zone from the world map
  4. Fight Siege Fragments - Each zone has siege-themed enemies + a Siege Fragment (a piece of the world boss)
  5. Damage Accumulates - All damage dealt to Siege Fragments across all zones is tracked globally against the boss total HP pool
  6. Boss HP Pool - Scales with active player count: Base 10M HP + (1M x registered players in current season)
  7. Duration - Siege lasts 24-48 hours or until boss HP reaches 0
  8. Resolution - When boss dies, ALL contributors get rewards

Siege Fragment Mechanics

Each siege zone contains a Siege Fragment - a special enemy type:

  • Siege Fragments have their own HP per zone (regenerates slowly between encounters)
  • ALL damage dealt to Siege Fragments is reported to the global boss HP pool
  • A one-shot kill counts: a player ten or more levels above a siege enemy kills it in one hit, and the health that hit took reaches the pool and the player's contribution like any other hit (the one-shot branch of )
  • A hit credits the health it removed, never its overkill: a killing blow of 400 on a fragment with 100 health left adds 100 to the pool and the contribution, the same figure combat metrics record, so no single hit drains more of the pool than the enemy held
  • When a Siege Fragment HP reaches 0 in a zone, it despawns for 5 minutes then respawns
  • This creates a natural rotation: fight fragment -> it despawns -> fight regular siege enemies for loot -> fragment respawns
  • Siege-themed enemies in the zone drop gold, items, and Siege Marks even without the fragment

Contribution Tracking

Each player contribution tracked in siege_contributions table:

  • siege_id, customer_id, total_damage, zones_participated
  • highest_single_hit (bragging rights)
  • time_spent_minutes, contribution_rank (calculated at end)

Reward Tiers (Based on Contribution %)

Tier Contribution Rewards
Participant Any damage dealt Siege Marks (10), XP bonus, gold
Combatant Top 80% Siege Marks (25), random rare item, siege trophy fragment
Veteran Top 50% Siege Marks (50), guaranteed legendary, siege trophy fragment
Champion Top 20% Siege Marks (100), rift crafting mats, full siege trophy
Legendary Top 5% Siege Marks (200), unique siege weapon/armor, full trophy + title

Siege Currency

  • Siege Marks - Earned from world sieges only
  • Spent at a Siege Vendor in the hideout for:
    • SHIPPED Wave 6: Siege Blessing (10 marks), Mastery Surge (25 marks, +500 Mastery XP), Rift Key (50 marks, advance current weekly rift tier by one)
    • Unique siege-themed gear (high stat rolls) — not yet
    • Cosmetic titles and effects — not yet

Siege Boss Themes (Rotating)

Siege Boss Theme Weakness Siege Zones
The Devourer Void/darkness Light/Holy Shadow Breach, Void Rift, Corrupted Temple, Lights Bastion
Infernal Engine Fire/mechanical Ice/Lightning Forge Front, Cooling Tunnels, Engine Core, Overflow Vents
The Plague Poison/nature Fire/Pure damage Quarantine Zone, Root Network, Spore Fields, Purification Site
Titan of Bone Undead/necromantic Holy/Physical Bone March, Crypt Depths, Soul Furnace, Sacred Ground
Storm Sovereign Lightning/air Earth/Nature Thunderhead, Eye of Storm, Grounding Station, Wind Shear

Siege Frequency and Seasons

  • Regular sieges: Every 72 hours during active season
  • Seasonal finale: One massive siege at season end (10x HP, double rewards)

Live Dashboard

  • Global HP bar visible from world map ("siege status" command)
  • Top 10 contributors displayed in real-time
  • Zone participation counts shown per siege zone
  • Estimated time to kill based on current DPS rate — NOT BUILT

What siege status speaks today (): the boss, its theme and weakness, global health as a number and a percentage remaining, the participant count, the caller's own damage and best hit, and the top three contributors. It gives no time estimate: nothing computes a damage rate from the siege's start time and health lost. It reads one participant count for the whole siege, not one per zone, and three contributors, not ten.

A siege ends at its end time. treats a siege past end_time as over: the first read completes it (completeSiege only moves an ACTIVE row, and reward tiers mint only when that move happened, so marks never mint twice) and returns no active siege. Minting is not paying: marks are claimed on the killing blow (), or when a character still on that siege's front is sent home below. A contributor who left the front before the end is paid at their next session: the returning launch claims every completed siege still owing them marks and says it once ("While you were away, the siege of The Devourer ended and paid you 12 siege marks."). is the definition.

A character saved on a battlefield that is gone goes home. loads the saved zone each turn and the teleport return point on teleport. A front belongs to the boss its ref names (SIEGE_FRONT_<BOSS>_<n>, DarknessFallsSiegeFrontCatalog.frontBossTheme), so a front is gone when the season's active siege is another boss's, or no siege is active. A gone front, or a zone ref the cache cannot build (), sends the character to its hideout with its return point cleared, refills its potions as any arrival there does, says why and what to say next, and pays the marks owed by the most recent siege of that front's boss. Layer 3: Mastery System (Account-Level Post-Cap Progression)

Concept

Account-level progression earned by playing at end game. Mastery perks benefit Standard characters on the account, current and future. This rewards long-term dedication and makes Standard alts stronger from day one. Current Season characters may show the account's Mastery history, but its mechanical effects remain inactive under seasons.md.

How It Works

  1. Mastery XP - Earned from ANY end game activity at level 100
  2. Mastery Levels - Each level requires increasing XP (uncapped, diminishing returns)
  3. Mastery Points - Each level grants 1 mastery point
  4. Mastery Perks - Points spent on permanent account-wide bonuses

Mastery XP Sources

Status: none of the rows below is awarded. has two callers: the per-turn feed (10 Mastery XP on every turn of a level 50 or higher character, in ) and the Mastery Surge purchase at the siege vendor (500). That is all the Mastery XP a player earns today. The rift formula exists as and nothing calls it; a rift clear, a siege, a boss kill, a legendary craft and a daily or weekly quest pay no Mastery XP.

Activity Base Mastery XP Notes Status
Rift tier clear 100 x tier Tier 10 = 1,000 XP NOT BUILT — formula only
World siege (participant) 500 Any contribution NOT BUILT
World siege (champion+) 2,000 Top 20% NOT BUILT
Boss kill (modifier zone) 50 x modifiers active 4 modifiers = 200 XP NOT BUILT
Legendary craft 300 Per legendary created NOT BUILT
Daily quest 100 Once per day NOT BUILT
Weekly quest 500 Once per week NOT BUILT

Mastery Level Formula

XP for level N = 1000 x N x (1 + N/20)
  • Level 1: 1,050 XP
  • Level 5: 6,250 XP
  • Level 10: 15,000 XP
  • Level 20: 40,000 XP
  • Level 50: 175,000 XP

Uncapped, but returns diminish. Most players reach 10-20 in a season; dedicated players hit 50+.

  5. Master Forge - +1 free reforge per day — SHIPPED Wave 11 (HIDEOUT_PERKS rank 5; free reforge cost waiver once/day)

Cross-Season and Alt Benefits

  • Mastery is account-level - persists across seasons
  • New Standard characters on the account start with ALL Mastery perks active
  • Current Season characters display Mastery but receive no mechanical benefit
  • This is a primary reason to grind endgame: the account's permanent Standard roster becomes stronger
  • Mastery level visible on leaderboard and inspection
  • Mastery choices are permanent (no resets) - creates meaningful decisions

Updated Standard Power Level Formula

Standard Power Level = (Level x 10) + (GearScore x 5) + (TrophyCount x 2) + (MasteryLevel x 3) + (HighestRift x 10)

Current Season uses the entitlement-neutral formula in seasons.md; it excludes account trophies and Mastery.

  • Siege Contribution (per siege and seasonal total)
  • Mastery Level (account progression)
