Quick Start

Dark Tower is a card-based interactive fiction RPG you play by voice on Amazon Alexa. Say "Alexa, open Dark Tower" to begin.

What Is Dark Tower?

Dark Tower puts you in a branching story where every choice matters. You navigate through cards — each one describes what's happening and gives you options for what to do next. Your decisions determine which clues you discover, which paths you unlock, and how each story ends.

The game features 5 distinct storylines sharing the same character system, with turn-based combat, 39 types of skill checks, hundreds of clues to discover, and an open world to explore between chapters.

The Basic Loop

  1. Read the story — Each card presents narrative text describing what's happening around you
  2. Make a choice — Pick from up to 4 options to decide what your character does next
  3. Face challenges — Some choices lead to combat encounters or skill checks
  4. Discover clues — Finding clues unlocks new story paths and better endings
  5. Grow stronger — Earn XP, find equipment, unlock new classes and abilities

How to Start Playing

  • Alexa invocation: "Alexa, open Dark Tower"
  • Create a character: Choose a name, race (14 options including Human, Elf, Dwarf, Orc, Vampire, and more), and starting class
  • Your first adventure: You begin the main Dark Tower storyline — 60 chapters of branching narrative
  • Combat: Say "attack" to fight, or try stances like "defensive stance" or "dodge stance" for tactical advantages
  • Exploration: Between story chapters, explore the open world to mine resources, go fishing, and train troops

New Player Tips

  • Clues matter most: The number of clues you find determines your ending quality — explore thoroughly and talk to everyone
  • Difficulty affects loot: Playing on harder difficulties gives you better equipment drops
  • You start with a dog: Douglas is your first companion — companions provide combat bonuses
  • Save your diamonds: The diamond shop has exclusive items worth saving for
  • Try all 5 stories: Switch between storylines anytime — each offers a completely different adventure
  • Use items in combat: You can use up to 3 healing items per combat encounter

Design Pillars

  1. One Engine, Many Stories — 5 games share combat, equipment, and progression while offering distinct narratives
  2. Card as Universal Unit — Every interaction is a card with options; combat, shops, and checks are overlays on cards
  3. Clue-Driven Branching — Story quality is determined by clues found, not just path taken
  4. Difficulty as Reward Lever — Higher difficulty = better loot, creating risk/reward tension

The 5 Games

Insanity System

Mechanic

Insanity is a percentage (0-100) stored in insanityLevel.

Escalation (only between two INSANITY-status cards):

  • 0-50 insanity: +1d6 per card transition
  • 51-80 insanity: +1d4 per card transition
  • 81-100 insanity: +1d2 per card transition

At 100%: Clears to 0, redirects to card 15653 ("Landing Point Insane").

Exit reset: Leaving INSANITY cards (moving to non-INSANITY card) resets insanity to 0.

Other sources: Punishments can add insanity. Rewards can reduce insanity ("claw back" sanity points).

Difficulty scaling: INSANITY-status cards get +0 to +7 difficulty bonus based on current insanity level.

At 100% insanity, your mind breaks — insanity resets to 0 and you are sent to a special "Landing Point Insane" sequence.

  • Level requirement: 25 (minimum to pray)
